GO GIRL RUN

On May 18th, 2013 Carol Rollins and I took a rest from tennis and traveled to Olathe, KS as we participated in the Go Girl Run.  The Go Girl Run was specifically designed to celebrate women, health and fitness, and ultimately support several women-centered charities in the area.  The Go Girl Run was to make a BIG difference and improve the lives of women!  We believe the event truly celebrate women and their accomplishments.  The Go Girl Run was being held in three different cities in three different weekends – Springfield – May 11, Kansas City – May 18, and Columbia MO – May 25.  Carol ran in the 5K (3.1 miles) event with her daughter while I ran in the half-marathon (13.1 miles) with my sister and sister-in-law.  I trained for it for the last six months and was hoping I could finish it within 2.5 hours or just to finish it.

It was a great day for a run, not too hot or too cold.  A few more hills than I expected, since the course in Springfield had no hills at all.  I tough it out and finished my race without puking everywhere.  My official time for the race was 2:26:21, which is better than the time I set for my goal.  I finished 19th out of 58th in my age division, and placed 270th out of 577 overall.  The average time was 2:32:20; I guess that’s not bad for my first half-marathon.

Carol did great in her 5K.  She finished with the time of 34:06.  She finished 3rd out of 12 in her age division and 122th out of 297 overall.   The average time for the 5K was 37:42, so Carol did really well.

So does this mean I will hang up my tennis racquet and start running full time? Uh, I’m not quite sure about that.  I know I would like to finish the Go Girl Run series.  I like to run in Springfield and then Columbia in the next year or two years, so I can say I have ran in all three cities.  But for now, I can proudly put the 13.1 sticker in the back of my car.

WE’RE ON A ROLL

The second match for the Jammers went pretty well on May 13th.  Teresa Emerson and Carol Rollins at singles.  Teresa had a great match against her opponent, Cheryl Daucher.  It was a pretty easy first set for Teresa; she dominated over Cheryl 6-1.  In the second set, Cheryl hung in there and won it at 6-3, so they had to battle it out in a match tie-break.  It was point by point, and our Teresa hung in there to win it for the Jammer at 10-8.

Carol’s singles match was quite interesting against Yvonne Bussmann.  I think Carol was more frustrated with Y-vonne than anything with her not knowing what the scores were, and interrupted Carol when she was about to serve.  Carol lost the first set 6-3.  Then after Y-Vonne took a 20 minutes break, Carol fought hard in the second set, but couldn’t come up with a win.  She ended up losing in a set tie-break 7-6.

Our doubles team of Kelly Kramer and Lisa Powell had an easier time.  They cruised through their match against their opponents Candise Kroutil and Tijuana Julian  in two straight sets with the scores of 6-1, 6-0.

Mary Ann Daum and Nancy Winters had a tough match but hung in there and come out victorious.  They lost in the first set to their opponents, Linda Donnelson and Lori Young 3-6.  Come back and win the second set at 6-0.  For the 3rd set tie-break, I guess they listened to their captain and remembered that ‘we do not lose in a tie- break’.  They dominated over their opponents with the score of 10-5.

The doubles team of Heidi Smith and Margaret Taylor also cruise through their match.  In the first set, they just lose 3 games to their opponents, Leah Clark and Lori Robinson, for the set score 6-3.  They didn’t drop a game in the second set with the score of 6-0.

So this week beer winners go to the doubles team of Kelly Kramer and Lisa Powell.  And the person who owes me a mojito would be Carol Rollins.  She lost in a tie break.  Sorry buddie!!!

Two weeks and two win down for the Jammers.  The next two weeks, the Jammers will have byes. Most of them will also be getting ready to travel to Bentonville AR to play in the SPAM SLAM May 31 – June 2.  Our favorite tournament ever!!!  Stay tune for our highlights about the weekend.

2013 USTA SEASON – OUR FIRST MATCH

The USTA season began for the Jammers on May 6th.  It was a long weekend for them since most of them competed in the USTA-NTRP Central Regional Championships, I wasn’t sure if they still have enough in them to compete in their first match for the season.  It doesn’t matter how tired they were, the Jammers still come out and compete hard to win their first match 5-0 against the Netchix.

Leigh Lewis first year with the Jammer playing at singles dominated her opponent, Carol Goldstein in straight two sets 6-1, 6-0.  After the match, I asked Leigh why she gave away that one game.  She didn’t know how to answer that. J

Kim Wood also her first year with the Jammer, was victorious at her singles match.  She defeated Lesley Skinner 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).

Our doubles team of Teresa Emerson and Nancy Winters had a tough evening, but they managed to pull out a win against Susy Barr and Peggy Lindsey with the scores of 6-3, 7-5.

Our lefty, Karen Griffin and new Jammer, Julie Skinner, come together and got a win for the team.  They defeated Karen Smith and Laura Wilhite 6-4, 6-1.

The doubles team of Kelly Kramer and Beth Wilson once again played great together; they were victorious over their opponents Polly Egbert and Ann Vogel in two sets 6-3, 6-3.

At the beginning of the season I have told the girls that whoever loses the least amount of game each match, I will buy them a beer for the evening.  However, whoever loses in a tie-break will have to buy me a mojito.  So this week winners are, Leigh Lewis, and the doubles team of Karen Griffin and Julie Skinner.  What a way to start out the season, one match down and 5 more to go.  J

2013- USTA-NTRP CENTRAL REGIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS

On May 3 – May 5, 2013 as a warm up for the USTA season, eight of the Jammers:  Teresa Emerson/Kelly Kramer, Julie Skinner/Nancy Winters, Leigh Lewis/Heidi Smith, and Mary Ann Daum/Karen Griffin  and two former Jammers Huong Doan/Hee Sun Kim went to St. Louis to play in the USTA-NTRP Central Regional Championships.  It was snowing in Springfield, yes snow, in May.  That didn’t seem to stop the Jammers from going to compete.  There was no snow in St. Louis, just rain all weekend, so the tournament was forced to move indoor at several different locations in St. Louis and Illinois.

Most Jammers arrived in St. Louis early for an afternoon match, but the rest wasn’t playing until Friday evening so we didn’t get there until early evening.  It was a long Friday for the Jammers; the only victorious Jammers for the evening were the team of Teresa Emerson and Kelly Kramer.  They beat their opponents Ann Eveker and Kathie Muehlheausler in two straight sets 6-4, 7-5.  The rest of the Jammers fought hard but couldn’t come up with a win.  Julie Skinner and Nancy Winters lost to Maureen Hurley and Cara McJunkin with the scores of 6-4, 7-6.  Mary Ann Daum and Karen Griffin took their match to a match tie-break, but couldn’t pull it through.  They lost to their opponents Catherine Dickson and Holly Hamilton with the scores of 6-3, 0-6, 1-0.  Our other Jammers team of Leigh Lewis and Heidi Smith also had a tight match against Stephanie Dintelmann and Cheryl Wayt, they also lost in two straight sets 6-4, 7-5.

Hee Sun Kim and I had fun with our match but our opponents were just so dominating on the court, Jodi Ferguson and Amy Snow defeated us in two straight sets 6-0, 6-2.

The rain finally quit on Saturday, another day in hope for victories for the Jammers.  Some of the Jammers had an early match on Saturday morning, which seem to favor the Jammers.  First round West-Consolation bracket, all the Jammers were victorious.  Julie Skinner and Nancy Winters had an easy time on the court against their opponents Linda Landry and Teresa Schlafly with the scores of 6-2, 6-1.   Leigh Lewis and Heidi Smith were also dominated on the court over their opponents Rebecca Hartfield and Carol Kennedy 6-1, 6-4.  Mary Ann Daum and Karen Griffin were able to advance to the next round, a walk over against their opponents Lauri Heitz and Becky Skeens.

Later that afternoon, Teresa Emerson and Kelly Kramer were also victorious in their match against Velma Carey and Joan Jennings 7-5, 1-6, 1-0, which advance them to the Quarterfinals of the main draw Saturday evening.

While all the 3.5 Jammers have all the luck.  Hee Sun and I just couldn’t find our chance at the 4.0 level.  We lost in our second match against Diane Ruzicka and Linda Schaper 6-1, 6-2.

Saturday evening, it was great to see ALL 8 Jammers playing in the Quarterfinals in the main draw and in the West-Consolation bracket, pretty impressive I might add.  It was a tough evening for some of the Jammers, Teresa Emerson and Kelly Kramer had a very tough lost against their opponents.  It could have gone either way; they played a great match but just couldn’t pull it off at the end.  They lost to Kim Bradfield and Dawn Melton with the scores of 6-4, 3-6, 1-0.

In the West-Consolation bracket, the Jammers won 2 of the 3 Quarterfinals.  Mary Ann Daum and Karen Griffin won their match against Jane Herder and Cindy Rapponotti in two straight sets 6-2, 6-4.  The same for Leigh Lewis and Heidi Smith, they defeated Martha Juhl and Anne Ross also in two sets with the scores of 7-5, 6-3.  Julie Skinner and Nancy Winters weren’t so lucky; they fought hard in their match and stretched it out to a match tie-break.  They lost to Ruth Ehresman and Heather Milton 7-6, 3-6, 1-0.  It was a tough loss for them.

A win for Mary Ann and Karen, Leigh and Heidi mean they will have to face each other in the Semifinals in the morning.  At least we know, one of the Jammer’s team will be in the Finals for sure.

Early Sunday morning, it was a match between our own Jammer girls.  All four gals are tough competitors, of course they are.  You can’t be a Jammer, if you are not competitive.  I hate to see that the Jammers had to play against each other, but we all knew, we have to run into each other at some point.  The Semifinals win that day belongs to Leigh Lewis and Heidi Smith with a win over Mary Ann Daum and Karen Griffin 6-0, 4-6, 1-0.

Hee Sun and I played Sunday morning as well.  Once again, we ran out of luck, we got defeated by Regan Hannigan and Patricia Hudson 6-2, 6-4.  It was an experience weekend for the both us.  We still have a lot to learn in playing at this level.  We will continue to work on our game and keep on fighting.

As far as the 3.5 Jammers, the rest of the Sunday afternoon went great for all of them.  Just when Julie Skinner and Nancy Winters thought it was over for them, they got moved on to play in the Southwest-Consolation bracket.  In the Semifinals they defeated their opponents pretty easily.  Diane Lewis and Nancy Rath didn’t have a chance; they lost to our Jammers 6-4, 6-0.  This led Julie and Nancy into the Finals for this particular bracket.
In the meantime, Teresa Emerson and Kelly Kramer were in the Northeast-Consolation bracket.  For their Semifinals match, they were also victorious over their opponents, Nancy Hinkson and Barbara Murray with the scores of 6-2, 6-3.  They are also in the Finals in their bracket.
By the end of Sunday evening, the Jammers were victorious in 3 of the brackets.  In the West Consolation bracket, Leigh Lewis and Heidi Smith was the winner when they defeated their opponents Ruth Ehresman and Heather Milton 6-1, 6-4.
In the Southwest-Consolation bracket Julie Skinner and Nancy Winters were the winner in the Finals when they out played their opponents Martha Juhl and Anne Ross with the scores 6-2, 6-4.
Our dynamic duo of Teresa Emerson and Kelly Kramer took the Northeast-Consolation bracket when they won their match in the Finals against Michelle Millonais and Lydia Sanders  with the final scores of 6-4, 6-2.
It was a perfect ending to the weekend.  All the girls did great.  They all went to St. Louis to compete, and they all competed indeed.  The tournament was a perfect warm up for the Jammers USTA season.  They will all be pump up for the 2013 season to begin.  I’m very proud of all of them.  Watch out, the Jammers are back!!!

JAMMERS ARE BACK

It has been a while since I’ve written in our blog.  It has been a quiet winter for the Jammers as far as tennis.  We didn’t do much in the winter as tennis goes.  Most of us just wanted to think back of our 2012 USTA season and see how far we did.  The season for the Jammers ended pretty early for 2012, but for those that were Jammers/Racquetheads that went on to Nationals, it was a season they will never forget.

2013 USTA League have change this year for us.  The age group format is different than it has been in the past.  For 2013, the Jammers can play 18 & Over and/or 40 & Over division, and all of us has opt to play in the 40 & Over division.  We will see how that will work out for us, not only will we play in the same level, but pretty much people in our age group as well.  No more of those 20 years old at Sectionals.

The USTA rules stated that if a team played at Nationals, they have to move up or split up for the next season.  They can’t stay together as a team.  Only 3 players can stay together, you have to split up, or the whole team move up to the next level.  Luckily for the Jammers, for 2013, we didn’t have to follow that rule.  Half of the Jammers were on the Racquetheads team that went to the 2012 Nationals, but they get to play together for at least one more year, which they are very happy.

Our 2013 roster looks a little different this year, most of the Jammers are the same, and we lost a few because of the age.  We lost Hee-Sun Kim because she got bumped up to 4.0 NTRP level.  So congratulations to Hee-Sun!!!  Suzanne Lennard would not be able to play with the Jammers this year.  She has family/travel commitments, (two weeks in Nicaragua as a family doing house constructions and taking care of medical needs, how cool is that) that will keep her from playing in Districts and Sectionals.  I know she’s a Jammer at heart and will be cheering the Jammers on.  There will always be a spot on the team for you Suzanne.  We also lost Julie Trout, Julie and her family moved to Wichita, KS.  Julie had been a team player for years, we will really miss her. And I hope she will find a team to play on when she’s in KS.  Any team will be very lucky to have her.

I on the other hand, am with the Jammers, but I have taken on as a different role.  I am no longer the captain of the team.  Since I have accepted the role of USTA League Coordinator, I can no longer allow to captain any USTA teams.  I have passed the captain torch back to Nancy Winters, who had the captain’s role before I did.  So it was only appropriate to give it back to her.  And of course, Nancy was happily to accept it back, with a condition that I will be the Jammers’ Coach.  As Kelly put it, yes I can still boss all of them around.  Hmmm, not sure if I ever do such a thing.  On the other hand, Lisa does call me ‘Little Hitler’.

We also like to welcome new faces to the Jammer team – Mary Ann Daum, Leigh Lewis, Julie Skinner, and Kim Wood.  I think they will fit quite well with the rest of the Jammers.  New Jammers are aware that we ALL have one goal every year – that one goal is to make it to Sectionals and do well.  That dream was kind of shattered for the Jammers in 2012; it will not be repeated in 2013 season.
