In Loving Memory

Today, Nancy Winters’ dad, George J. LePore, went to be with the Lord at the age of 82.  He was born in Bronx, New York and resided in West Hartford for 53 years.  George was a Korean War Army veteran and a retiree from Combustion Engineering in 1981.  After retirement, George pursued his passion as a full-time painter in the impressionistic style, specializing in the New England Landscape.  He was often seen painting along the Maine seacoast or within the woodlands of Connecticut.  He taught art at the Farmington Guild,  West Hartford Art League and the Wethersfield Art League.

 

Our condolences go out to you Nancy and your family.  We will keep you and your family in our thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

2013 USTA League Section Championship

On August 8 – 11, 2013 the Jammers traveled to Des Moines, IA to compete in the 2013 USTA Sectionals Championship.  The trip to Sectionals was a repeat for several of the Jammers, but it was also a first timer for a few of the new Jammers.

It was a little bit different in 2013; there was no players’ party, so the team took our time making the trip to Iowa.  We all met for dinner once we arrived in Des Moines on Thursday evening.

Our first match Friday morning wasn’t until 10:30 AM, so the team didn’t have to rush in the morning to get there.  We did get on site plenty of time to do some warm up drills as a team in the parking lot.

The Jammers did great with our first match against the St. Louis Wildcard team.  Leigh Lewis had a long singles match against her opponent, Diana Stevenson.  She lost the first set in a set tie-break 6-7.  She hung in there and won the second set 6-4.  And finished the match by winning the match tie-break 1-0.  Julie Skinner also did well at her singles match.  She won her match against her opponent, Irene Schoolfield with the scores of 7-5, 6-2.

In doubles line ups, Teresa Emerson and Nancy Winters, defeated Margaret Ropelle and Michelle Wilson with the scores of 6-4, 7-6; Kelly Kramer and Beth Wilson had an easy time against their opponents Karen Shaw and Margreta Talen with the match scores 6-0, 6-4; Maggie Taylor teamed up with Heidi Smith for our 3^rd doubles.  They had a tougher time with their match but also come out on top.  They defeated their opponents Barbara Criner and Brenda King in the first set tie-break 7-6; lost in the set tie-break in the second set 6-7; they hung in there and won the match tie-break 1-0.

It was a great start of the day for the Jammers beating the St. Louis Wildcard team with the team win 5-0.  Woo hoo!!!  The next match up for the Jammers would be against Heart of America team.

The Jammers had a tougher time in their 3:30 PM match Friday afternoon.  They took the match against Heart of America with the match score of 3-2, but I wouldn’t say it was that easy for them.

Once again, Leigh Lewis played singles for us.  She defeated her opponent, Jan Rockwell, in two sets 6-3, 7-6.  Nancy Winters tried her hands at singles this time.  She gave it her all, but couldn’t come up with a win for the team.  Nancy lost to Deanna Paramore in two sets 6-4, 6-1.

Teresa Emerson teamed up with Kelly Kramer this time and defeated their opponents Kim Hanson and Kay Acuff in two straight sets 7-6, 7-5.

 Julie Skinner and Beth Wilson also did well at doubles together.  They defeated their opponents Wendy Leiker and Betsy Triplett with the scores 7-6, 6-1.

Our third doubles for the afternoon were Maggie Taylor and Mary Ann Daum.  They played well together but couldn’t come up with a win.  Maggie and Mary Ann lost to Susanne Stanley and Amy Rogoz in two straight sets 6-4, 6-2.

The Jammers have won both their matches on the first day of competition.  They knew with the two wins, they will definitely be playing Saturday afternoon.  Oh yeah, Friday was also my birthday, perfect ending to my day!!!

Saturday morning, the Jammers also had a 10:30 AM match.  This time against a Nebraska team.  It was a very tough match for the Jammers.  Leigh Lewis was the only win for the team that morning.  She lost in the first set in a set tie-break 6-7.  She hung in there and won the second set 6-3.  It was a tough match tie-break, but she pulled it off and won the match tie-break as well 1-0 against Allison Arntz.

It wasn’t her day; Teresa Emerson couldn’t do it at singles.  She lost to Rebecca Lee with the scores of 6-2, 6-3.

Kelly Kramer and Beth Wilson didn’t do so well Saturday morning, they lost to the doubles team of Linda Hitzemann and Jenny Sladicka 7-5, 6-4.  No such luck for Nancy Winters and Julie Skinner, they lost to their opponents Chris Shouse and Beth Camenzind with the scores of 6-2, 6-0.

Maggie Taylor and Lisa Powell weren’t able to finish their match against Kimberly Sorensen and Lisa Smith.  After playing 2 games, they have to retired the match due to an injury with Lisa Powell.

It wasn’t one of the best matches the Jammers played.  With the loss to Nebraska, the Jammers were in second place after pool play.  They are still in it, it just mean, they don’t get a bye in the Quarter-Finals; they had to play in the afternoon.

Saturday afternoon was the Quarter-Finals in which four teams battled it out in which two teams will get the remaining spots in the Semi-Finals.  Missouri Jammers playing against St. Louis, while Heart of America battled it out against Kansas.  Oklahoma and Nebraska are automatically in the Semi-Finals since they won pool play.

It was a great Saturday afternoon for the Jammers; they took St. Louis team with 3-2 matches win.  Leigh Lewis only lost for the weekend was to Faye Lucas.  She lost in the first set 1-6 won the second set 6-3, but couldn’t win the match tie break, lost it at 8-10. 

Julie Skinner did great in her singles.  She defeated Joan Jennings in two straight sets 6-1, 6-4.

Teresa Emerson and Nancy Winters beat their opponents Lori Schreck and Susan Blake in a match tie-break.  They won the first set 6-2, lost the second set 4-6, and won the match tie-break.

Kelly Kramer and Beth Wilson came very close but couldn’t defeat their opponents.  They lost to Kathy Drissell and Mickey Woolums in two sets, both went to set tie-break, 7-6, and 7-6.  It could have gone either way.  Darn it, it didn’t go our way!

Maggie Taylor and Heidi Smith once again did great together.  They defeated their opponents Sharon Dillane and Jan Stobie in two easy sets 6-0, 6-1. 

A win against St. Louis guaranteed the Jammers to move on to the Semi-Finals on Sunday which they would face Oklahoma.  In the other Semi-Finals, it was Kansas versus Nebraska.  Kansas upset Heart of America in the Quarter-Finals to earn a spot in the Semi-Finals.   

Sunday morning came; it was an early morning match for the Jammers, 7:30 AM match.   We all get up early for breakfast before heading out to the courts.  The Oklahoma team was there for breakfast as well, it was a very quiet breakfast for both teams.  Neither teams said anything to each other.  It was an interesting morning indeed.

The Jammers Sectionals competition ended that Sunday morning against the Oklahoma team.  They defeated the Jammers 3-2 to advance to the Finals and eventually the 2013 Sectionals Champion.  We came very close, but just couldn’t pull it off, 3 of the matches went to a match tie- break.  The last match we were waiting on, we lost 8-10, just two points away from being in the Finals.  OMG!

Julie Skinner played a very tough singles player that morning, even though she lost to Stephanie O’Malley 6-2, 6-4.  I think she played well.

Leigh Lewis played her 5^th singles match for the weekend.  She defeated her opponent, Kara Max in the first set 6-1; she lost in the second set in a tie-break 6-7.  Leigh hung in there and won the match tie-break 1-0 and got a win for the team.

Kelly Kramer and Beth Wilson teamed up together one more time.  They fought hard but couldn’t get it done.  They lost to April Bonnet and Mellissa Parker 6-0, 6-4.

Teresa Emerson and Nancy Winters had a tough much but they hung in there and pulled off a win.   They lost the first set 2-6, won the second set 6-4, and stayed tough to win the match tie-break 1-0.

Maggie Taylor and Heidi Smith fought hard for their match, point by point.  They lost the first set to Shari Singleton and Lee Ann Beyersdorf 5-7.  Maggie and Heidi came back and won the second set 6-3.  They were behind in the match tie-break, came back, but couldn’t pull it off; they lost it at 8-10.  It was a very close match.

Every Jammer played hard that weekend, none of them gave up.  Yes, we were disappointed that we were that close to being in the Finals, and yet couldn’t get there, but we were a little closer than we were before.  That just mean we will work a little harder next season and fight a little harder to make it happen.

This is not the end for the Jammers; we will continue to find ways to improve our games to get us to Indian Wells one of these days.  None of us will stop until we reach that goal.  We know it is possible, so we’re not giving up trying.

As for me, 2013 has been a great USTA season.  This is the first year both my 3.5 and 4.0 teams made it to Sectionals.  It was one of my goals to see that happen, and that actually happened this year.  Not sure what my goal is for 2014 and after that.  How much longer will I be with the Jammers?  I think 2013 is it for me with the Jammers, I like to concentrate more on getting the 4.0 team to go farther, like the Jammers has.  A lot for me to think about, not 100% sure what I will do in 2014.  But one thing for sure, I will always support the Jammers, whether I’m there physically or not.  There will always a place in my heart for the Jammers.  Once a Jammer, always a Jammer!

87th Annual National Public Parks Tennis Championships

Several of the current and former Jammers, participated in the National Public Parks Tennis Championships here in Springfield, MO over the weekend.  It was a fun weekend for all, Congratulations to all the winners.

Riverchase Summer NTRP Tournament

This past weekend, Teresa Emerson and Kelly Kramer, headed to Florida on vacation, and while on their way, they stopped in Hoover, AL to compete in a little tennis tournament.  I am happy to announce, they are the BIG WINNERS of the 2013 NTRP Women’s 3.5 Doubles of the Riverchase Summer NTRP Tournament.   Woo Hoo!!!  Not sure how much money they’ve won from the tournament, my bet is, not enough to retire from the Jammer’s team.  Congratulations girls, you’ve made us proud!!!

2013 Local League Champions

This week the Jammers wrap up their regular season with a win to give them once again as this year 2013 USTA Local League Champions.   Yay!!!

It was a hot night for tennis for sure, but the Jammers didn’t let the heat bother them.  It was also opening night for the WTT (World Team Tennis) for the Springfield Lasers as well.  A lot was going on that night, but the Jammers stayed focus and brought in a 4-1 win against the TopSpin team.  

Leigh Lewis won her singles match against her opponent Nancy Skinner in two straight sets with the scores of 6-0, 6-4.  Carol Rollins played singles once again and had to take her match to a match tie-break.  She won the first set 6-1 against Judy Daugherty.  She lost in the second set 1-6.  Fought hard in the tie break and won it at 10-5.

Teresa Emerson teamed up this time with Lisa Powell at doubles.  They had a tougher time in their match but manage to pull out a win.  The first set went to at set tie break, where they were behind at 1-4, but came back and won it at 7-4 against their opponents Leah Clark and Lori Robinson.  They have an easier time in the second set, where they won it with a score of 6-1.

Beth Wilson and Mary Ann Daum had a tough night against their opponents Candise Kroutil and Cheryl Daucher.  Beth and Mary Ann lost in the first set 2-6.  They took the second set to a set tie break.  They fought hard for every point, but couldn’t pull out a win; they lost the second set at 7-9.

Our third doubles team of Heidi Smith and Margaret Taylor pull out another win together with their match against Linda Donnelson and Tijuana Julian.  Heidi and Maggie won in two straight sets with the scores of 6-1, 6-2.

Since the Jammers win the Local League and Columbia does not have the 40 & over 3.5 team this year.  The Jammers will automatically advance to the Sectionals Championship in Des Moines IA August 8 – 11 this year.  It was kind of disappointing that there is no District Championship for the Jammers to play in, but they are definitely ready to go to Sectionals to compete for sure.

OMG…Really?

This week match wasn’t pretty for the Jammers.  They lost their first match for the season 2-3 to the Netchix.  Nancy Winters tried her best at singles against Pat McCormick.  She fought hard, but it wasn’t her day, she lost in two sets 6-4, 6-1. 

Kim Wood was also having a tough time in her singles match against Carol Goldstein.  In the first set, Kim was down at 0-5, but turned around and won the next 3 games.  But that’s all she could do in the first set.  She lost it at 6-3.  In the second set, Kim won the first 3 games.  We all thought she was on her way to win the set.  It didn’t work out for the Jammers.  Kim lost in the second set at 6-4.

Kelly Kramer teamed up with Beth Wilson again for their doubles match.  It was a tight first set, point by point, and game by game.  They won the first set against Karen Smith and Lesley Skinner 7-5.  They have a little easier time in the second set; they won it at 6-3. 

Our second doubles team of Karen Griffin and Lisa Powell were really having a hard time in their first set.  They lost 6-1 to Peggy Lindsey and Susy Barr.  Lisa said they played a little bit better in the second set but just could pull out a win for the team.  They lost the second set to the Netchix 6-4.

Heidi Smith joined forces with Margaret Taylor and played well together.  They won their match in two straight sets against Ann Vogel and Polly Egbert 6-2, 6-1.

It was a tough lost for the Jammers.  But I think it will give them a chance to reexamine what is it that they need to do to win their last match for the season.  They need to see what they all need to do AS A TEAM to move forward when they compete at Sectionals.  I hope they realize that at any given time, a chance at Sectionals can be taken away from them if they lose sight of it.  I’m sure none of the Jammers would like to sit at home again like they did last year. 

The Jammers have another bye next week, so it will give them a chance to think about what happened this week and perhaps work on their game and be ready for their last match of the regular season.  Can’t have an undefeated season this year, but perhaps the chance at Sectionals will be a great one!

Arkansas Adult NTRP Clay Court Championships

Over the weekend, Teresa Emerson and Kelly Kramer went to Little Rock, AR to compete in the Arkansas Adult NTRP Clay Court Championships.  Yes, they played on clay courts.  They were the Women’s 3.5 Doubles Consolation Winners.  They defeated Melanie Kiker(1)/Lori Uekman(1) 6-4; 5-7; 1-0 in the Finals.  Congratulations ladies on a job well done!!!

4-0 RECORD

Our Jammer girls did well this week; maybe my pep talk last week did help.  They won all 5 courts against the TopSpin team.  Kelly Kramer won her singles match against Candise Kroutil 6-2, 6-1.  Lisa Powell made her debut at singles and won her match 6-0, 6-0.  Pretty impressive I say.    Okay she won her match because the other team defaults.  Now that’s something you will never see the Jammers do.    We would never give an easy win to our opponent like that.  We make them work for it.

Our doubles team of Leigh Lewis and Julie Skinner, who never play together, had an easy match over their opponents Tijuana Julian and Linda Donnelson 6-1, 6-1.  Mary Ann Daum and Beth Wilson had a little tougher time with their match.  They won the first set 6-4, but lose the second set 3-6 against Nancy Skinner and Judy Daugherty.  They had to battle it out in the 3^rd set tie-break, which Mary Ann said to herself as she started to serve the first point for the tie –break that she refuse to lose, and that’s all it takes.  Mary Ann and Beth won the tie-break 10-4.    And our third doubles team of Carol Rollins and Margaret Taylor had an easy time with their match.  They won their match within an hour against Leah Clark and Lori Robinson 6-2, 6-0.

Four matches under their belt the Jammers are undefeated.  Way to go Jammers!

ARE THESE THE SAME JAMMERS

Even though it was a long and tough weekend for some of the Jammers, they still have a match to play when Monday came.  Everyone was tired from playing in the Spam Slam so the match on Monday was a tough one to come back to for the Jammers.  Everyone knew how important this match against the Netchix was going to be for us.  We cannot lose to them.   

The girls did well; not their usual best, we won 3 out of 5 courts against the Netchix.  Teresa Emerson won her singles against Lesley Skinner in the first set pretty easy 6-0.  She fought hard in the second set after falling behind at 4-0 to win it at 7-5.  Great come back TE!

Julie Skinner tried her best at singles for the first time.  She hung in there and fought for every point but couldn’t come up with a win.  She lost to Pat McCormick with the scores of 6-2, 6-2.  Great try Julie; you’ll get her next time!

 

Our doubles team of Kelly Kramer and Nancy Winters won their match against Susy Barr and Peggy Lindsey with the scores of 6-3, 6-1.  The team of Karen Griffin and Kim Wood  battled it out against Karen Smith and Laura Wilhite but couldn’t come out on top, they lost with the scores of 6-3, 6-4.  And our third doubles team of Leigh Lewis and Heidi Smith were victorious with their match against Carol Goldstein and Ann Vogel.   They also won their match with the scores of 6-3, 6-1.

Yes, the team did win their match, but I was still disappointed in how they play.  Maybe I’m just too hard on them, and expected too much from all of them.  I knew they were tired, but sill, they DID NOT play their best at all.  We came very close to lose that match.  I was NOT very happy with them at all.  Their overall performance was just unacceptable to me.  If they continue to play like that the rest of the season, the Jammers will not be going to Sectionals.  So I told them they ALL better get their butts in gear and play like a winner the rest of the season, otherwise, it will be a repeat of what happened to them last year-sitting at home, while another team played at Sectionals.    Let’s see how they will play next week.  Geez!!!  They are stressing me out!!!

2013 – SPAM SLAM

Some of the Jammers traveled to Bentonville AR on May 31 – June 2 to play in the Spam Slam Tournament.  For some, it was our second year to compete at the Spam, for others it would be their first.  Last year, Springfield brought 10 players to the Spam, this year we brought over 30 players to Bentonville.  Current and former Jammers did great but not as great as we had wanted to.  Last year, we captured the 3.5 Women’s Singles and Doubles titles, and were finalists in both singles and doubles in the Consolation bracket for the 3.5 Women’s.  This year, Teresa Emerson and Nancy Winters made it to the Quarterfinals, while Kelly Kramer and Heidi Smith made it to the Semifinals in the 3.5 Women’s Doubles.  Carol Rollins was the finalist in the Consolation bracket in the 3.5 Women’s Singles. 

 

Debbie O’Reilly and I was the finalist in the Consolation bracket for the 4.0 Women’s Doubles, we lost in the match tie-break 13-11.  That was hard for me to lose; I don’t usually lose in a tie-break.  Tough lost that weekend.    

I then teamed up with my mixed doubles partner, Alex Wiley; we won the 9.0 Mixed Doubles Consolation bracket against Vanessa Pruitt and Tim Sammarco 6-3, 0-6, 1-0 (10-8).  Had the best match ever playing mixed. 

It was a long weekend but we all had fun.  We enjoyed going to Bentonville and played since we don’t know the players.  Different type of games and we always learn something every year we go.  We all are definitely come back to this tournament every year.
